Exploring the Intriguing World of “Tower of God”
For quite a while, I kept encountering one recurring topic—“Tower of God.” Everything related to “Tower of God” was flooding my feed. A few days ago, I even mentioned in one of my videos that it is one of the most underrated anime. To validate my point, I decided to give it a try. Firstly, the title has “God” in it, and secondly, it’s based on a manhwa, so it was hard to ignore. Finally, I watched the first episode, but the initial 10 minutes left me trying to figure out what exactly was happening. This anime is so fast-paced that everything is thrown at you at once, unlike those animes where things are explained step by step.
Its Available on Netflix.
The Initial Hook
By the time I grasped the premise, I was hooked. In fact, I finished the entire anime in just six hours. Yes, I am that free, and now I’m wondering when the second season will be out. You might be wondering, was it that good? And the main point, is it better than Solo Leveling? To address this, we need to understand the story’s premise.
The Premise of “Tower of God”
In short, “Tower of God” is an action, dark fantasy, and mystery genre anime that tightly integrates all these themes. It’s based on a South Korean manhwa by SIU. You might want to read it—there are only 598 chapters, fewer than One Piece, and it’s still ongoing as of this video’s recording. Despite being South Korean, it was produced by a Japanese anime company, which brought significant changes that will become clear as you continue watching.
World-Building and Structure
As the title suggests, the entire story revolves around a tower-like structure. At the top of this tower are things beyond imagination. Whatever you desire—fame, wealth, power—you can find it at the tower’s peak. This might sound familiar, like One Piece, where the main goal is revealed early and drives the entire story. However, “Tower of God” is a bit different because reaching the top can even make you a god. The world-building is also comparable to One Piece. The entire story takes place inside the tower, which is so vast that each level is comparable to a continent, such as North America. Each level has its own religion and governing bodies.
The Tower’s Structure
The tower has three parts: the outer tower, where people live; the inner tower, where selected individuals undergo various tests to ascend; and the middle part, which connects the levels. The tower also has a governing body of rankers, individuals who have previously climbed the tower and oversee the tests. The tower’s caretaker, an almost god-like creature, chooses those who will climb, known as regulars. Some people, called irregulars, open the door themselves to enter the tower.
Main Characters and Their Journeys
The main story, however, is about two individuals, a boy and a girl. The girl’s name is Rachel, and she dreams of climbing the tower to see the stars, which are not visible from below. This is her main motivation, but she likely has other reasons as well. The boy, Bam, has a more mysterious background. Initially, it was confusing because he was called “Yoru,” but the subtitle showed “Bam.” After some research, I discovered that his real name is “25th Bam.” The confusion arises because “Bam” in Korean means “night,” and during the anime’s translation, it was literally translated to “Yoru” in Japanese.
Bam’s main goal is not to climb the tower but to follow Rachel, whose goal is to reach the top. This sets the stage for their intertwined fates and the challenges they face within the tower.
The Tournament Arc
Even though he doesn’t want to, he has to climb the tower. And of course, since he’s the main protagonist of the series, it’s obvious that he’ll have a bit more potential compared to others. As you watch, you’ll start to understand where the story is headed.
Now, let’s talk about its main highlight, which is its tournament arc. Every anime has its arcs, and in this one, we get to see something similar to Black Clover’s Royal Knight Selection Exam, One Piece’s Dressrosa tournament, the Chunin Exam in Naruto, and Hunter x Hunter’s Heaven’s Arena. Similarly, we get to see this tournament arc where some of our favorite characters fight each other, and after the fight ends, they become very close friends. It doesn’t make sense at first that these guys were trying to kill each other, and now they are such close friends that they eat together.
This tournament arc is quite similar to Hunter x Hunter’s Heaven’s Arena arc, because first of all, the characters are quite similar, like Bam, who reminds us a lot of Gon. Even though there’s a huge difference between the two, if you draw a comparison, you’ll immediately click that they look alike.
Key Characters: Khun and Zahard Princesses
Then there’s Khun, who I’m currently watching this anime for, because right from the start, we know this guy is very powerful, and he’s going to do something amazing, which he does. If you want to draw a comparison, he looks a lot like Killua, but he’s not exactly like Killua. Yes, there are some similarities like both have white hair, they’re fast, and both have very depressing backstories, but where one uses force, the other uses plots and plays with his mind, and what a mind he has! Then there’s Androssi Zahard, who is okay. I mean, yes, she is good but not as good as Yuri Zahard. Now, why are they called Zahard? Because basically, they are Zahard Princesses. I won’t tell you much more about them, because it will spoil a lot.
The Relevance of Characters
Now, I’m telling you about these characters because they remain quite relevant until the end of the anime, and even towards the end of the story, they are going to remain relevant. Based on a little introduction, these characters leave a big impact in the anime. Each episode of this anime brings some new mysteries, which means you can say that this tower has layers upon layers, which get deeper with each episode. However, this season has only 13 episodes, but the 12th episode will hit you hard. When I saw that last scene, my mouth was wide open, because at that moment, I realized what just happened, and my question was, where is the second season and when will it come?
The Pace and Unique Elements
Keep in mind that this anime is quite fast-paced because it skips a lot of unnecessary things. Many conversations that could provide support to the story are not included, and some arcs are skipped, so the story only follows the main points. These reasons keep the interest in the anime alive until the end. Here, something very unique was shown, which is the 13 Month Series, and these are swords that, when wielded, can release certain individuals’ powers. Yes, I know this plot is quite similar to Bleach, but this happens a lot in the anime community. Drawing similarities is quite easy, but for now, not much detail was given about it this season. I think later in the anime, this will become an overpowered system.
The Downsides: Animation and Pacing
Let’s talk about the main minus points of this anime. The animation is not that great. I mean, it’s not on the level of Demon Slayer, but it’s not bad either. It was released in 2020, so yes, for 2020, it could have been done a bit better. Otherwise, it could have been on someone’s top 10 list. Believe it or not, the first thing any anime watcher notices is the animation; the story plays a secondary part. I’m not saying the animation is bad, but it’s not that great either. For example, Mob Psycho, which also didn’t have great initial animation, but the story covered it up.
The second major minus point is its fast pace. I know that due to the fast pace, many unnecessary things are skipped, and the focus is only on the main points, but because of this, we don’t get to see the character development that is necessary. In just the second episode, they were ready to kill each other, and in the fourth episode, they are mingling well with each other. Yes, their friendship makes sense, but how it reached this point is not clear.
To strengthen the bond of friendship, a few more moments were shown, and if more time was given, those moments would have made more sense. Even Bam’s real name, 25th Bam, I found out later. I know that Bam’s full name is going to play a very important role, because no character is given a number without reason, and there will be a reason behind the 25th in his name, which we will find out later. If this is shown in the anime later, by then, its value might be lost, and maybe by then, our perspective on things will have changed.
Conclusion: Is It Worth Watching?
So, is it good? Yes, in my opinion, it is good. If you don’t like relationship or dialogue-heavy anime, but rather a full action, mystery, and plot-driven anime, then you can definitely go for this one, because it is written very well, and it delivers everything it needs to show. Now that I have praised this anime, the main question is, is it better than Solo Leveling? In simple terms, yes, it can be a bit better than Solo Leveling. Though I have read Solo Leveling completely, I haven’t read this one entirely, but the way this anime is progressing, it seems to me that yes, it has the potential to be better than Solo Leveling.
